Virginia Health Information (VHI) collects and releases data on hospitals operating within the state. The data is obtained from hospitals' annual licensure surveys, which are collected annually. The VHI bed utilization data shows information for each hospital operating in Virginia as well as utilization data for twenty major service units.

The data set includes information on hospital characteristics as well as measures of the amount of care provided. Some useful types of data included in the VHI Bed Utilization database are:

Some useful data elements include:

  • Hospital addresses and administrator names and titles
  • Licensed beds by bed classification
  • Staffed beds by bed classification
  • Patient days by bed type
  • Discharges by bed type
  • Discharge days by bed type
  • Short stay discharges by bed type

RPC holds these files from 2005 to 2009 (the most recent year available).

Reporting Hospitals
All non-Federal hospitals in Virginia must submit annual licensure surveys to the Virginia Department of Health. This information is gathered into the Bed Utilization database by VHI. IN the most recent year available 87 hospitals had data reported in the VHI Bed Utilization file.
